Flood: FG Assuages Concerns Of Food Scarcity

The Federal Government has commenced the deployment of micro irrigation kits and water pumps to flood-prone areas for flood recession agriculture and dry season farming.

It also stated that it has begun distributing various food commodities, early maturing seeds, and subsidised fertiliser and chemicals to farmers in attempt to mitigate the consequences of the flood that decimated many farms across the country.

Dr. Mohammad Abubakar, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, told media on Tuesday in Abuja that the interventions are being conducted by the ministry and partners to offset the expected interruptions in food production and supply caused by floods.

Abubakar stated that mini-earth dams and water collecting facilities are being built and rehabilitated in front-line states to retain excess precipitation for dry season farming and fisheries.

He claims that this will boost water availability for home and agricultural usage, minimise farmers'-harder tensions, and increase food production in the country.

"Participation in land preparation with state and local governments to open more land and take use of leftover moisture for dry season farming," he said.

He stated that the Ministry conducted the 2022 wet season Agricultural Performance Survey across the country to give factual data that aids in the mitigation of flood-related consequences and assures higher food production in Nigeria.

He noted that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development has begun distributing various food commodities from the federal government's strategic food reserve to vulnerable and flood victims.

He also stated that there is a push to promote higher climate-smart livestock housing in order to reduce the impact of floods on livestock companies.

"The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is working with the Federal Ministry of Interior to increase farm security through the deployment of Agro-Rangers around the country," he explained.

"A five-year tax cut has been approved as an incentive to stimulate private investment in the agricultural sector and improve food production, processing, and marketing."

"200,000 MT of various food items restocked in the Strategic Food Reserve."

"Supplying pasture seeds, bio-fertilizer, harvesters, choppers, and other pasture and feed processing equipment to pasture farmers and pastoralists in order to boost pasture and feed production and processing."
