Kanu spoke when his lawyers came to visit him in the Department of State Services (DSS) detention centre on Thursday. He also said that he was saddened by the fact that security agencies were attacking and killing more people in the South East based on "unjustified" claims.
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Kanu's main lawyer, was quoted in a statement as saying, "Biafrans (people from the Southeast) should realise at this point that we are in a very serious situation that calls for a complete change of story."
Ejiofor says that Kanu strongly told his supporters and the people of the Southeast zone to ignore any order or statement that could lead to violence. He also said that it was his "greatest sadness that Biafrans are being dumped every day inside the detention facilities of various security agencies with no traces of where or when they were detained."
"He said it's scary how quickly this massive attack on innocent citizens is getting more attention."
Kanu said, "People should be guided by this hard fact: when criminal gangs commit crimes on our land, our innocent fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters are usually killed, and others are arrested without cause and dumped at the different security agencies across the country, where they are detained at the pleasure of the establishment."
Ejiofor said Kanu "shows how serious this factual situation is. Today, the DSS sent our law firm a bunch of papers they filed in one of the cases we are prosecuting against them. Strangely, they included a long list of Biafrans being held at Wawa Barracks, Niger State, at the pleasure of the state." "This is how messy things have become."
The statement said that Kanu was clear, and it also told people in the Southeast that they should stop helping their common enemies.
Ejiofor said, "Onyendu told our people to be very careful because he knows that the people who are still stirring up trouble on our land in the name of the struggle are the real enemies of our people."
