Its spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, issued a short statement on Monday: "The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been called to the false rumour circulating that its agents had stormed the Central Bank of Nigeria and arrested its governor today (16/1/23)." This is false and misleading information."
Emefiele has returned to the United States after a few weeks in the United Kingdom.
Monday's announcement from the CBN's Director of Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, confirmed the situation.
Following allegations of his impending arrest by the Department of State Service (DSS) for alleged terrorism financing, the CBN governor discreetly departed the nation for the United Kingdom late last year.
Justice Maryam Hassan of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory halted the DSS from arresting and detaining Emefiele for alleged terrorism financing last year, describing the charges as spiteful and weak.
Emefiele swore to continue doing his duties as CBN governor upon his return.
The statement added, "The CBN Governor began his duties with fresh vigour before the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the year, planned for January 23 and 24, 2023.
Mr. Emefiele remains committed to completing the task at hand in accordance with his oath of office and the president's policy directives.
While appreciating the public's continued confidence in the Bank, we urge Nigerians to continue to support the Bank's policies targeted at ensuring a stable financial system and economy in general.
