IPOB rejects Soludo's offer, insists Kanu is free

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have rejected the governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo's commitment to serve as guarantee for the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

According to IPOB, the stage when its leader required security for any bail has passed, and Kanu has been released and exonerated of all charges at this moment.

It said that the federal government should instead obey its own court and release the jailed separatists.

"We appreciate the Governor of Anambra State-Governor Charles Soludo's appeal for the unconditional release of our leader MAzi NNAMDI Kanu," stated the group's media and publicity secretary, Mr Emma Powerful, in a press statement made accessible to journalists.

"But the said call for the unconditional release of our leader is belated, and coming three months and one day after the Court of Appeal, Abuja judicial division, in its erudite judgement delivered on the 13th day of October 2022, discharged and acquitted the leader of IPOB and all the remaining 8-Count amended charge preferred against him.

"As a result of the unprecedented decision, the court ordered his unrestricted freedom. It also prevented the Federal Government of Nigeria from holding our commander anymore or even submitting him for trial on any accusation or offence before any Nigerian court."

According to the organisation, Kanu is no longer under indictment and cannot be claimed to be free; rather, Soludo should join the call for Kanu's unconditional release.

"It is crucial, then, to explain that our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has no kind of indictment or even charge pending against him today before any court under the authority of this Judgement.

"The topic of giving bail or otherwise does not arise by any stretch of reason or imagination, because it is the Federal Government that is presently in contempt of this judgement of higher court of competent Jurisdiction.

"It is to be stressed further that Onyendu, who was freed on the 13th Day of October 2022, by the Court of Appeal does not have any need for surety because there is no charge hanging on his neck today.

"We have gone beyond the question of surety or no guarantee, any sincere call/demand under the current scenario should be firmly oriented at calling on the Federal Government of Nigeria to promptly follow the order for the unconditional release of 'Onyendu' given by its own court.

"May we also remind Governor Soludo and others that Onyendu's continued detention is unlawful and an insult to constitutional democracy and the rule of law."

According to the organisation, Soludo's type of argument is the reason Nigerian governments have no regard for the rule of law.

"Why should we be appealing with them to heed their own court judgements ordering Onyendu's unconditional release? "It is imperative and obligatory for them to obey their own court orders," stated IPOB.
