Gov. Umahi fines Ebonyi APC N5m for campaign violations

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has been fined five million naira by the Ebonyi State Government for violating the conditions of Executive Order 3 of 2022.

Executive Order 3 prevents political parties from using public spaces, such as parks, marketplaces, and schools, for political activity without prior approval from the state.

Remember that in November, Governor David Umahi signed an order forbidding political parties from accessing essential infrastructure or public facilities for campaigning without state permission.

In a statement released on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Uchenna Orji, the state stated that the governor was saddened by the continued pasting of posters on meridian lines, electric poles, flyover bridges, and concrete roadways by political parties.

These parties include the Peoples Democratic Party, APC, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and the Labour Party.

When the APC launched its campaigns for governor and president in the state, it plastered the infrastructure with posters, prompting other political parties to follow suit. The majority of the essential infrastructure is covered in posters, in violation of state legislation and the Executive Order regarding the posting of posters and billboards.

Orji remarked that the governor has consequently chosen to use his own political party, APC, as a deterrent for others. Therefore, the party is fined N5 million for disobeying the government directive.

"The All Progressive Congress must transfer the funds to Ebonyi State's Internally Generated Revenue account by December 31, secure a receipt, and announce the payment through all media platforms or face a N50 million default cost."

"However, the governor decided to pardon other political parties and urged them to remove their posters from vital facilities by December 31.

Umahi admonished, "The government will seal the secretariats and campaign offices of any parties that refuse to remove posters or cease pasting them on essential infrastructure."

Additionally, the governor of the state, Umahi, forbade all street campaigns.
