Petrol costs N270 per litre in Anambra

Premium Motor Spirit, more commonly known as gasoline, costs between N260 and N270 per litre in Awka, the state capital of Anambra.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, transportation costs have grown significantly in reaction to the increase.

The mega and minor retail outlets of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited in Awka were closed to consumers due to a lack of inventory, while only private marketers' outlets were selling gasoline and a small number of vehicles were in line to purchase it.

Some motorists in the city were concerned that the price of gasoline continues to grow without anyone intervening.

They accused marketers of unfairly increasing prices in anticipation of the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

According to NAN, intra-city shuttle fares have soared by 100 percent, with transporters now charging N200 for trips that formerly cost N100.

Mrs. Jane Oranu, a government servant who resides in Onitsha but works in Awka, reported that a one-way ticket that previously cost N300 now costs between N750 and N800.

Oranu stated that the increase in transportation costs has a negative impact on household budgets.

As a response, Mr. Chinedu Anyaso, chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Enugu depot community, attributed the price hike to the price of acquiring items.

Anyaso, who is in charge of the states of Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu, stated that marketers were now purchasing PMS at above N240 per litre, with a loading fee of N3 and a transportation cost of N15.

"It is not our fault; the amount we charge reflects the ex-warehouse pricing, which is N240." We pay N3 for loading and N15 for transport to our outlets, resulting in a landing cost of N258 and N260.

"As you can see, the alternative to the current situation is bankruptcy, but we must remain in business to continue serving our customers, especially during the Christmas season."

"It is even harming our businesses, as our sales have decreased by around 50 percent since clients are not purchasing, thus we are calling on the Federal Government to deliver things massively and directly to marketers, rather than through these private depot owners," he said.

Anyaso advised members of the public to recognise the efforts made by Southeast marketers to make fuel available, but explained that they have little control over pricing.
