According to Ndi-Igboworldwide, Onyike, a former Commissioner for Information in the state and Deputy National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, was kidnapped at the Octovia Pharmacy on Water Works Road in Abakaliki, where he reportedly went to get medication.
Two large armed guys suspected of being Ebebeagu members entered the pharmacy, loaded the victim into their Sienna bus, and carried him away.
The victim, who is a prominent spokesperson for the PDP candidate for governor in the 2023 general election in Ebonyi State, Dr. Ifeanyi Odii, was reportedly taken to the Ebubeagu Office in Abakaliki, where he was ordered to remove his clothes and mercilessly beaten till, he was released.
Friday Nnanna, the Ebebuagu Commander in the state, stated that Onyike's detention was a mistake, as he was captured at an area where a suspect was being pursued.
According to him, he was released as soon as his name, place of origin, and personality were determined.
