Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, were arrested in June 2022 along with their physician, Obinna Obeta, on charges of conspiring to arrange the travel of another individual in order to exploit him and harvest his organs.
Between August 1, 2021 and May 5, 2021, it is alleged that they conspired with unidentified third parties and another family member, Isaac Ekweremadu, to arrange the travel of a 21-year-old man named David Ukpo Nwamini with the intent to exploit him. They are accused of facilitating David's travel from Lagos to London in order to harvest one of his kidneys for their daughter Sonia, who has a kidney-related illness and has been on dialysis for some time.
Prosecutors claim in court today that the plan was to harvest Nwamini's organ for Sonia's benefit. Prosecutors informed the court that the Ekweremadus and their physician were arrested after a young man who had previously lived on the streets of Lagos claimed he was a victim of human trafficking and presented himself at the Staines police station.
According to the prosecution, Nwamini told police officers he arrived in the United Kingdom on February 20 and was taken to Royal Free Hospital for tests to which he did not consent. Nwamini stated that he had returned to the house where he had been staying, where he was effectively treated as a slave. According to the prosecution, he fled the address and was homeless for three days before contacting the police.
