Anambra Govt, Police Deny UNIZIK Students' Rape Report

The Anambra State Government and the state Police Command have refuted allegations that gunmen raped female students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka.

According to reports, gunmen broke into off-campus hostels in Awka's Ifite village and robbed and raped nine female students while hurting nearly 20 others.

However, Mr Ejimofor Opara, Special Assistant to the Governor of Anambra State, stated that the information is incorrect.

"I was present yesterday (Friday) when the state police commissioner met with Unizik management and SUG leadership," he said.

"We even visited the dorms where several students were attacked and interviewed most of the victims. They made no mention of rape. "How did certain journalists get that story?"

The Anambra State Police Command has also disputed the report, urging rape victims to file complaints with the command.

"We desire to declare that there is no report/record as being peddled by some online media and national publications branded "17 persons injured and nine female students raped in a dormitory," the command said in a statement.

"However, the command not wanting to join issues ask the victims of the event (if there is any) to come forward with information that will allow the Police to embark on investigations.

"Also, members of the public should be guided as significant situations of this nature should be reported to the closest police station than resorting to social media. This will allow the police to conduct preliminary investigations before conducting a full probe.

"Given the aforementioned, the release is unsubstantiated and poised to cause tension and bring the state to dishonor, kindly disregard it.

"The Command further warns the peddlers of this information that if arrested, they will not be spared."
