According to reports, two of the assailants were killed in the ensuing battle with police agents from Aba's Ndiegoro Police Station.
According to Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, who confirmed the incident, several police officers from Ndiegoro Police Station were on patrol around Iheorji when they were attacked by people thought to be ESN/IPOB members.
"During a gunfight, one of the cops paid the ultimate price, while two of the attackers were neutralised.
"As they shot the cop, they also took his police AK-47," Ogbonna informed reporters.
Bobo Ononibe, the notorious robbery kingpin, was shot dead.
Meanwhile, a known armed robbery kingpin, Bobo Ononibe, has been slain by Delta State police at Orogun in the Ughelii North Local Government Area.
Delta Police spokesman DSP Bright Edafe told media on Tuesday that Ononibe died from significant gunshot wounds sustained during an encounter with police operatives at their hideout in the Unukpo-Orogun palm tree plantation in the Orogun village.
Ononibe and his gang members, according to Edafe, had been on the police watch list for their role in a foiled robbery operation in Orogun Community on June 23, 2022.
"The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Orogun mobilised and led police operatives to the area in a proactive move to prevent further attack," according to the statement.
"As police agents neared the plantation, the hoodlums opened fire but were overcome by the superior firepower of the police.
"The hoodlums escaped, but not before the gang boss, one Bobo Ononibe, was seriously injured by gunshots."
Edafe added that the suspect was escorted to the hospital and later pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
He also stated that the gang recovered one locally-made, cut-to-size gun, three ammunition, one machete, one dagger, and native charms, and that efforts were being made to apprehend the fleeing hoodlums.
