A Nigeria Police Force officer was reportedly slain on Saturday when gunmen stormed a Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection centre in Imo state. According to reports gathered by Ndiigboworldwide on Sunday morning, the gunmen assaulted the centre while citizens were queuing for their voter registration cards ahead of the 2023 national elections.

According to Chienyere Chijioke-Osuji of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the incident occurred in the state's Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area.

The incident was alleged to have produced tension in the neighbourhood, with neighbours fleeing for safety.

Chijioke-Osuji confirmed the attack, claiming that some persons were injured and a police officer was killed.

"It happened today in Ahiazu Mbaise. A police officer, not an INEC employee, was shot and killed. "No corps member was injured, however my AEO Ops, Barrister Kingsley Ohiri, and the CLO of the LG dislocated their knee and arm while hopping over the fence," Chijioke-Osuji was cited as saying by the news site.

"Please contact Barrister Ohiri," she continued. God be praised for saving our lives. It's a shame we lost our head security officer to the LGA."

However, as of the time of publication, the State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the occurrence. According to Ndiigboworldwide, the latest attack comes as the electoral authority laments the ongoing attacks on its facilities across the country.
