Abiodun Alabi, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, has cautioned the media against disseminating false information that could incite violence ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The State Police Command organised a conference for broadcast, print, and internet journalists on fake news and its security implications, especially in light of the upcoming elections.

The purpose of the event, which took place in the Police Officers' Mess in Ikeja, was to educate journalists and media executives on the effects of misinformation and disinformation.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Alabi stated that fake news might result in the breakdown of law and order, and he urged the media to always verify material before spreading it.

The chief of police cautioned that anyone found guilty will be held responsible.

Olusegun Agbaje, INEC's Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos, participated in the symposium's criticism of fake news.

In addition, representatives of the State Security Service (SSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC), and the Nigerian Bar Association were present (NBA).

Center for Democracy and Development (CDD), the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), and the Police Eminent Persons Forum were the others (PEPF).
