According to people acquainted with the matter, Attorney-General Abubakar Malami and federal cabinet secretary Boss Mustapha are among those attending the meeting. Senator majority leader Ibrahim Gobir was also present, although he arrived late, according to an official. Several deputy governors of the bank were reportedly present at the meeting, which began at approximately 5:00 p.m.
The details of the meeting, which lasted approximately an hour and a half, were not immediately made public, but a senior official said it was related to an attempt to force Governor Godwin Emefiele to quit and bargain his way out of being arrested by the State Security Service.
Recently, the SSS attempted to arrest Mr. Emefiele, but the scheme was thwarted by two court decisions that frowned upon such extreme steps against the man in control of the nation's monetary policies and laws.
The Gazette has determined that Mr. Emefiele has spent weeks travelling between the United Kingdom and the United States, attempting to seek asylum in either nation.
Mr. Emefiele has promised to remain outside of Nigeria until President Muhammadu Buhari provides a clear assurance of his protection from the SSS, which has continued to threaten him over claims of economic sabotage and terrorism financing.
