According to a statement signed by Mr. Martin Agbili, Director/Fire Chief of the Anambra State Fire Service, the incident happened at 6 p.m. on Atani Road near Uga Junction in Onitsha.
He said that the attackers broke the fire truck's windscreen and side mirrors and hurt some of the agents.
He said that around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2023, the Anambra State Fire Service got a call about a fire at Uga Junction by Atani Road.
He said, "Our fire truck and firefighters were sent to the scene right away." When we got to where the fire was, the crowd attacked us.
"They hit us with rocks, sticks, and iron.โ Unfortunately, they broke the windscreens and side windows of our fire trucks and hurt some firefighters.
Even though the fire was still going, they started throwing rocks at the truck. What we could hear was, "Are you coming now to put out the fire?" We were able to get away from the crowd attack with a broken windscreen and firefighters who were hurt."
"It's a shame that our hardworking firefighters in Anambra State will be greeted by this cruel act on the first day of the New Year," he said.
