Obasanjo sought a South-East president—Omokri

Reno Omokri, a former adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan and ardent supporter of People's Democratic Party presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has stated that former President Olusegun Obasanjo has long desired a president from the South-East.

Omokri took to Twitter on Sunday night to respond to the former president's endorsement of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as his favourite choice for president.

Omokri, who described Obasanjo as a man with a kind heart, stated that the former president desires a southeastern president to heal the wounds of the 1967–1970 civil war.

Omokri tweeted, "Obasanjo is a decent individual." As a means of healing the wounds of the Civil War, he has long desired a president from or near to the Southeast. In 2007, he desired Peter Odili as vice president, but Yar'adua insisted on Governor Jonathan.

"OBJ's actions will have no effect on the election!" he added.

According to Ndiigboworldwide, in a letter to Nigerians prior to the February 2023 presidential election, Obasanjo backed Obi as his chosen presidential candidate.

Obasanjo characterised Obi as his protégé in his New Year's greeting for 2023, which was distributed to the media by his assistant Kehinde Akinyemi. Obasanjo also stated that the former governor of Anambra State had an advantage in the 2023 elections.

Obasanjo's letter stated in part, "None of the candidates is a saint, but when one compares their character, antecedent, understanding, knowledge, discipline, and vitality that they can bring to the table and the great efforts required to stay focused on the job, especially considering the current state of the country and my own experience on the job, Peter Obi as a mentee has an advantage."

Others, like us all, have something they may contribute collectively to the new dispensation for the freedom, restoration, and salvation of Nigeria.

"Another significant fact about Peter is that he is a needle with thread attached from North to South, and he cannot get lost."

In other words, he has access to individuals who can pluck his ears if necessary. His running mate is a young, accomplished individual with a spotless reputation in both public and private life.

The ruling All Progressives Party and the opposition People's Democratic Party have protested vigorously against Obasanjo's backing of Obi, who became president under the PDP.

According to Ndiigboworldwide, both the APC and the PDP asserted that Obasanjo's endorsement of Obi would have no impact on the upcoming elections.

In response to Obasanjo's lengthy message, Bayo Onanuga, Director of Media and Publicity for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, stated that Tinubu would not lose sleep over the former president's support for his Labour Party opponent.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP's National Secretary for Publicity, stated, "The Nigerian people's approval is what matters." Vote-gathering victory is not contingent on the endorsement of any individual, regardless of their status.
