Gunmen stormed a military checkpoint on Saturday night in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, causing a tangible increase in the level of tension in the state. The checkpoint was located on the Ubomiri/Nwaorieubi route.

According to information acquired by Ndiigboworlwide, residents of the surrounding area have already fled their homes out of fear of a new assault, and they are bemoaning the fact that they do not know where to go.

During the course of the shootout, two people were reportedly killed, according to a witness who requested their anonymity on Sunday morning and stated that there was heavy gunfire that lasted for more than 45 minutes.

He stated that the thugs, who allegedly opened fire on the military personnel, arrived in a Toyota Sienna at approximately 7:30 p.m. and parked a considerable distance away due to the heavy traffic before attacking the checkpoint.

He stated that members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as well as members of the security force have been the targets of gunmen in the most recent months.

At the time that this report was being prepared, the efforts that were made to acquire a response from the Army were unsuccessful since the spokesperson, Captain Joseph Akubo, did not pick up his calls or respond to the message that was sent to him.
