Nnamani to Politicians: Stop Character Assassination and Put Your Energy Into Issue-Based Campaigns

Politicians running for various public offices in the general election of 2023 have been urged to stop character assassination and mudslinging and instead concentrate on issue-based campaigns that would directly affect Nigerians.

Reports that the call came from the former Enugu State governor, Chimaroke Nnamani, who claimed that political gladiators involved in such a campaign of calumny are obviously bereft of ideas.

According to him, the electorate at this point should be wise enough to vote for candidates with proven records of performance and “Not those who exploit our fault lines of ethnicity or religion to gain an advantage.”

Nnamani, in his goodwill message to Nigerians commemorating the new year, noted that Nigerians need to vote for candidates who can be trusted, and as such “Anyone vying for public office must have his or her manifesto or programme of action.”

He advanced that “We need public officers who can truly identify with the people because the outcome of 2023 polls will define the future of Nigeria.

“We should do away with mundane issues of ethnic or religious sentiments but vote for candidates based on capacity and competence to deliver.”

Nnamani, who is the Senator representing Enugu East bemoaned the state of insecurity and appealed for a free, fair and credible election in 2023, adding that it would reflect the true wishes and aspirations of Nigerians.

While calling for collaborative efforts between the security operatives and communities to fight the menace of insecurity ravaging the country, especially in the southeast, he observed that the government alone can not fight the battle because “These criminals who live amongst the people in the communities” should be fished out by community participation.

Nnamani prayed for a peaceful environment that would guarantee free, fair and credible elections in 2023.
