The Ihiala Police Divisional Headquarters in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, south-east Nigeria, has been bombed by armed men.

Residents reported that the attack occurred around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

The gunmen allegedly threw improvised explosive devices into the facility, destroying a structure within the station.

Uju Okafor, a native of the area, stated that the bombing and random shootings by the gunmen prevented them from sleeping during the attack.

"I was terrified when I first heard about the heavy gunfire and bombings," she stated.

Mr. Okafor stated that it wasn't until later in the morning that they realized the assault occurred at the police facility.

Chinonso Okoye, another native of the area, reported that during the attack, some prisoners were set free.

"The gunmen began firing and throwing bombs at an early hour this morning," he said. "We heard that they released some individuals from the police cell," he continued.

Wednesday, the police spokesperson in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga, issued a statement confirming the attack.

Mr. Ikenga, a deputy superintendent of police, stated that police operatives engaged the gunmen in gunfire during the attack and recovered an Ak-47 rifle.

According to him, no lives were lost in the incident, and the perpetrators "escaped the scene due to the superior firepower" of the agents.

"Unfortunately, the explosives that the gunmen threw inside the police station had already sparked a fire and damaged the structure," he said.

However, a police spokesperson stated that the fire had been extinguished.

Mr. Ikenga replied, "Yes, and we are currently on their trail," when a reporter asked if the attackers had set some prisoners free.

He did not specify how many prisoners were released by the gunmen.

Enhanced attacks

The security of Anambra State and other states in the south-east of Nigeria has deteriorated due to frequent attacks by armed individuals.

The attacks frequently target government officials, security agencies, and facilities.

The most recent incident occurred less than a week after gunmen invaded two communities in the state and kidnapped and murdered two individuals.

On Sunday, two youth organizations in the state announced the arrest of more than eighty alleged criminals from their hiding places in the state.

The Nigerian government has blamed the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra for the violent attacks in the region. However, the group has denied involvement in the attacks on multiple occasions.

The separatist group is leading the charge for the creation of an independent state of Biafra from the south-east and parts of the south-south of Nigeria.
