Anambra police refute Nsugbe youth arrests

Anambra State Police Command has disassociated itself from a report that the state Criminal Investigation Department, in connivance with a former senator, illegally detained two youths from the Nsugbe community in Anambra-East over alleged vandalism of Enugu Electricity Distribution Compan

DSP Ikenga Tochukwu Anthony, the command's public relations officer, said the publication is fake and meant to stir the people against the police.

The press statement states the issue in the alleged publication is before an Awka Federal High Court and the suspects have been remanded.

"This publishing is a media trial to drum up sentiment and solicit public sympathy for fraudulent charges," the statement continues.

Please ignore this since a Federal High Court in Awka is hearing the case and the suspects are on remand.

People of the Nnadi village in Nsugbe have protested the arrest and detention of two sons, Chidi Akudo and Charles Obodoechina, since November 13, 2022.

The community regretted that the two teens' "offence" was clearing shrubs along the power line that provided energy to the neighbourhood after two years in darkness "so our people can celebrate Christmas and the New Year with light."

In a Save-Our-Soul (SOS) message to SaharaReporters, the community said the decision to clear bushes along the power line that delivered energy to the village was made after its youths in diaspora contributed money to pay Enugu Electricity Distribution PLC and restore light.
