Upper Iweka is a neighbourhood in the city of Onitsha that is known for having a high crime rate. It is believed that the suspects in these crimes are responsible for the petty crimes that have occurred in and around this neighbourhood.
According to a press release that was signed by Mazi Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu, the leader of Anambra Youth Volunteers and the Anambra North zonal coordinator of the Anambra Joint Enforcement Team (ANJET), the effort of the team was motivated by the desire of the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to have a Christmas celebration that was free of crime.
During the previous two weeks, a voice note that circulated online that made a complaint about the activities of criminals in Upper Iweka went viral. Okpalaezeukwu stated unequivocally that the gang relocated after hearing the voice note.
He said, "Going forward, the Anambra Youth Volunteers, in partnership with the Upper Iweka Joint Enforcement Team and other law enforcement agencies, will continue to render Upper Iweka and its environs inhabitable for criminals."
"We have sent a team of local teenage volunteers throughout the state to support law enforcement authorities with intelligence and enforcement wherever it is appropriate," the statement reads. "We ask the people of Anambra to support Mr. Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo's attempt to make our nation a desirable place to live and a prosperous place to work,"
