Enugu natives protest killings, implore Buhari to intervene

Comments · 669Views

Hundreds of Eha-Amufu residents from Enugu's Isi-Uzo LGA staged a peaceful protest in Abuja on Friday over gunmen killing their people.

Since 2021, hundreds of Eha-Amufu residents have been slain, they say.

Demonstrators had signs. "Eha-Amufu and communities evicted" Stop slaughtering Eha-Amufu people; cease ethnic cleansing Save our community, cease ethnic cleansing; Eha-Amufu people are killed daily.

IfeanyiChukwu Casmir, chairman of the Eha-Amufu Peoples' Forum, blamed the killings on armed herdsmen.

On December 7, 2020, unknown males ambushed a truck on the Eha-Amufu-Nkalagu highway and killed the driver and passengers.

Casmir urged President Muhammadu Buhari to send the army to quell retaliatory attacks.

After the vehicle incident, armed herders allegedly stormed Eha-Amufu on December 8, 9, 18, and 19 and burnt buildings on fire.

"We are utterly shocked and greatly distressed by the series of attacks on Eha-Amufu, which began on December 8, and the continued massacre of our people en masse—51 deaths in Mgbuji and 22 in Abor—not sparing women or children; destroying our economic fortunes, displacing families, and subjecting us to intense fear. The assailants are reported to be Fulani militia on a killing rampage in Abor, Agu-Amaede, and Mgbuji autonomous villages, all in Eha-Amufu, since mid-2021 to avenge their supposedly slain cows in 2021, prior to the truck event.

If attacks are a revenge, attackers should cease and face genuine concerns. We think the attacks are historical. The bloodletting is the product of a desperate opponent who used the truck passengers' misfortune as an opportunity to kill the Eha-Amufu. We believe the attacks are related to Eha-land Amufu's dispute with her Benue neighbours.

"It's clear that the attackers want to wipe off the Eha-Amufu. Past events inform modern events. The land dispute between us and our Benue neighbours has lasted for years.

"Eha-Amufu won the land dispute before the civil war." The ruling is archived. The conflict has given Eha-Amufu dual challenges in recent years. First, our Benue neighbours keep encroaching on our land, citing farming. Intermittent quarrels and clashes are constant.

Early in 2020, Fulani herdsmen arrived to graze seasonally.

At mid-2020, a belligerent Fulani clan emerged and settled near the NNPC pipeline grounds in Eha-Amufu. They attacked and killed Eha-Amufu farmers. Then they occupied the disputed territory.

"The settlement on that territory prompted this Fulani tribe to claim ownership of Eha-Amufu from north to south, from the Benue border to the town's centre, despite accessible records to the contrary." The organisation and its allies cause us Eha-Amufu much trouble.

"They occasionally assault and abduct for ransom." Elders from Eha-Amufu approached Fulani leaders to negotiate peace. "When the peace attempt collapsed due to bureaucratic intervention, kidnapping and killings were common in our area. Corpses were retrieved virtually daily."

The forum condemned Enugu State's failure to "deal with the persistent killers"

They asked the president to direct the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Defence Staff, and the National Security Adviser to replace GOC 82 Army Division Enugu with a more suitable individual.

The forum encouraged the President to "order relevant authorities, particularly NEMA, to visit Eha-Amufu with humanitarian remedies"

They stated, "The president should ask the Police and DSS to investigate the December 7 truck passenger deaths in Eha-Amufu and take appropriate measures; quickly discover and arrest the assailants and those behind the December 8, 9, 18, and 19 attacks in Eha-Amufu."

"Direct relevant officials, including the National Boundary Commission, to visit Eha-Amufu and resolve land disputes between Eha-Amufu and the Benue communities and Fulani groups and Eha-Amufu."
