In a statement released by the command's spokesman, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna, the Police Public Relations Officer, the command said, "All existing laws that ban the sale and use of fireworks commonly known as "knock-out," "banger," etc. have been activated."
So, Ogbonna, a Superintendent of Police (SP), told parents and guardians to tell their children and wards to stop using fireworks. He also said that vendors should "take them off the shelves" because anyone caught breaking the law will be prosecuted.
The full text of the statement says, "The Abia State Police Command wants to remind the good people of Abia State and their visitors that the ban on the sale and use of fireworks is still in effect.
"All of the laws that say you can't sell or use fireworks like "knock-outs," "bangers," etc. have been put into effect. The Command has also told its surveillance and tactical teams to make sure it gets done before, during, and after the holidays.
"Parents and guardians are asked to tell their children and wards to stop using fireworks, and sellers are told to take them off the shelves because anyone caught breaking the law will be prosecuted.
