During the flag-off ceremony at the Abia State Office of the NDDC in Okeikpe, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, the Commission's Acting Managing Director, Mr. Emmanuel Audu-Ohwavborua, said that the Commission would continue to make a difference in the lives of the people in the region by pursuing critical and relevant interventions in its mandate states.
Audu-Ohwavborua, who was represented by the Director of the Abia State Office and the incoming Abia State Representative on the NDDC Board, Mr. Dimgba Eruba, said that President Buhari and the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Obong Umana Okon Umana, told the Commission to respond quickly to the problems caused by the flood.
He said, "This flag-off ceremony is being held today in the spirit and with the goal of making our people's lives better after the flood and supporting the good work of the relevant agencies and state governments in the region to help flood-damaged, needy people in the region."
"We are looking forward to re-starting our flagship programme of Free Medical Outreach to different communities in the region as a way to bring critical life-saving health services closer to the people in under-served and poor communities across the region, especially now when flooding has disrupted healthcare systems and infrastructure."
In his speech, Chief Okey Kalu, who is the Chairman of Ukwa West Local Government Area, thanked the NDDC for doing many important projects in his council area. He said that part of this was fixing up the Obehie-Okeikpe Road.
Chief Leonard Ejiogu, the Council Chairman's special assistant, spoke on his behalf and thanked the NDDC for responding to the needs of the people. He also promised that the relief supplies donated by the Commission would be given to the affected people in an open and honest way.
In his own remarks, Eze Chinyere Dike, Chairman of the Ukwa-West Traditional Rulers Council, thanked the NDDC for helping flood victims in different communities. He said that the aid would go a long way toward easing the effects of the flood.
