Emefiele: Anti-DSS Protesters Raid Court, File Petition AGF

Over 200 protesters stormed a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday in response to a complaint surreptitiously filed by the Department of State Services charging Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, of terrorism financing and other offences.

Buhari Legacy Defenders, the Arewa Youth Consultative Movement, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Movement, the African Centre for Justice and Human Rights, ethnic youth leaders, the Political Parties Chairmen Forum, and Lawyers in Defense of Economic Rights and Justice were among the demonstrators.

They marched to the Federation Attorney General's Office, where they submitted a petition against the actions of the DSS and sought the dismissal of its director, Yusuf Bichi.

In addition, they sent similar letters to the offices of the President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the Inspector-General of Police.

The demonstrators, who carried placards with varied inscriptions, also claimed that the DSS hatched the scheme to oust the CBN governor for political and monetary motives.

Tochukwu Ohazuruike, who had earlier addressed a news conference, stated that the DSS DG and his accomplices in the scheme had already given the office to someone else on the condition that the cash withdrawal restriction policy would be stopped immediately.

The demonstrators also alleged that the plan to designate Emefiele a terrorist was intended to destabilise the president, usurp his hiring and firing authority, and remove Emefiele from office based on an order to hold him for at least 60 days in order to install another individual as Central Bank governor.

In the secret suit filed under Section 66 of the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2022, the DSS petitioned the Federal High Court in Abuja to order Emefiele's first incarceration for sixty days.
