The source says that the event happened between 9 and 10 p.m. on Saturday in the Umunya community in the Oyi Local Government Area of the state of Anambra.
The source said that the lawyer who died was on his way from Abakaliki to Onitsha to attend a ceremony for a child's dedication when the accident happened.
It was also said that the victim had stopped at Umunya on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway to use the bathroom when the suspected kidnappers came up to him. As he tried to escape, the suspects allegedly shot him in the stomach and took his car, his phone, and the phones of the other people in his car who were going with him to Onitsha.
DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who is in charge of public relations for the state police, could not confirm the incident as of press time because, according to him, the command had not yet heard about it.
Barrister Victor Alo, the head of the Abakaliki Lawyers Association, told reporters on the phone that the person who died was taken to Immaculate Heart Hospital, Umudioka, where it was confirmed that he was dead.
Alo, a lawyer who lives in Nkpor near Onitsha, also told reporters that the dead man's body had been taken to a nearby mortuary at Awkuzu and that the case had been reported to the Oyi Divisional Police Headquarters at Nteje.
So, he told the Anambra state police command to try to catch the people who did this terrible thing within a reasonable amount of time.
