Okey Ezea: State policing would worsen Nigeria's insecurity.

Okey Ezea, the Labour Party's candidate for the Enugu North senatorial district in the 2023 general election, has said that state policing would make the country even less safe if it were put into place.

Ezea said that state policing can only work well if it is not run by the governors of the states.

He says that if state governors keep running the police in their states, security will be worse than when it started.

The Labour Party candidate for Enugu North told Punch that it is clear what state governments are doing with their different vigilante groups, so one should wonder what would happen if they were in charge of state police.

Ezea's view on state police goes against what most people think. Many people have pushed for state police, saying that it would make the country safer.

But the Labour Party candidate disagrees and says that "security in Nigeria has become a problem of existence." In Nigeria, there is danger everywhere, and it's getting worse every day. So, the problem needs a very serious solution from the government in the form of laws that give the police better people and better tools to do their jobs.

"But when the state police get involved, it's a different story." It should not be up to the governors of the states.

"Security will get worse if state governors keep control of state police." The situation will be worse than when we began. You can easily see what the state governments are doing with the vigilantes. You see how automatic rifles are given to people who haven't been trained and don't know much about guns.

They bring in cultists and people whose greatest joy is that they have their own guns and can kill into these vigilante groups. The problem of insecurity and the role of the state police needs to be carefully looked at to find a solution that meets the needs of the people.

When asked about running against Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the current governor of Enugu State, in the race for the Enugu North senatorial district, Ezea said that the outcome of the polls won't depend on whether someone is an incumbent senator, governor, or president. Instead, it will depend on how well the public likes the candidate.

"So, if Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi thinks he's doing a great job because we're facing our people, who gave him the most important job he's ever had, let's campaign and wait until election day to see who the people choose." It's not just about paying for a court case against my election.

"People will think it's between members of the same party. My opponent in this race is Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and he doesn't want to run into me on the field.

The truth of the matter is that. Ifeanyi doesn't want to run against me for office. He wants to get rid of me.

Ifeanyi is now dividing up land in Enugu State and giving Abuja judges certificates of occupancy. Quote me. If he doesn't, you can ask him under the Freedom of Information Act who was given the piece of land between the Nigerian Television Authority and the Institute of Management and Technology. His land ministry is busy putting up fences around some of those plots and giving the papers to people we know. "So, that's what's going on," he said.
