NEC, the group that makes the most important decisions for ASUU, agreed that the different branches should keep holding protest rallies to let the public know about the situation of university lecturers.
At a meeting of the NEC at the University of Calabar, ASUU made the decisions (UNICAL). Some members of the NEC told the Daily Sun that, contrary to what Nigerians thought, the union did not think about going on strike to get what it wanted.
Members of the NEC said that the meeting decided to keep holding protest rallies at the zonal level. One of the chairmen said that NEC had also decided to keep talking to different groups about how the federal government was treating the union badly by not meeting its demands and not paying members' back salaries.
Before the important NEC meeting, the federal government paid November salaries to university professors wrongly.
The NEC meeting happened a month after ASUU members protested against the government for paying them only half of their salaries in October and not acting on their demands.
The National Industrial Court of Nigeria ordered ASUU to end its eight-month strike on October 14. (NICN).
Because of the "no work, no pay" policy, the federal government only paid ASUU members half of their salaries at the end of October. They also promised not to pay the other seven months' salaries.
