Goods Worth Billions Of Naira Destroyed As Fire Gutted 600 Shops In Anambra

At least over six hundred shops at a plaza on Kano street beside Onitsha Main Market, Anambra State on Sunday, November 27, 2022, were gutted by fire.

The incident which has already turned the victims in mourning mood has created fears and shock to traders in both Kano street and Onitsha Main Market.

When newsmen visited the scene of the incident to ascertain what happened and the level of damage some traders are still in shock as the fire still rages on in the market.

Firefighting personnel were still battling to extinguish the blaze that broke out at the market at 1 am on Monday at 3:10 p.m.

The firefighters are still battling to put out the fire as of the time this report was submitted, despite having used up several tanks of water.


The traders who had gathered in large numbers were stunned, recounting their losses as they watched in shock and disbelief.

The fire has currently destroyed goods worth several billion naira, including groceries, cosmetics, wines, provisions, and many other items that are sold in the plaza.

Reacting to the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga said the situation is under control on the fire outbreak that occur in the early hours of today.

According to him, no life was lost though goods worth billions of naira have been affected.

He said preliminary information shows that the cause of the fire is a result of an electrical upsurge from a Cosmetics store in the story building. their personnel is still there monitoring.

The PPRO noted that the Command wants to use the opportunity to advise members of the public to always turn off their appliances before leaving the house and offices.
